TCL 98X11L: 98-inch SQD-Mini LED Google TV
The TCL 98X11L is a 98-inch class 4K SQD-Mini LED TV with a native 144Hz panel, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and Google TV. Its 97.5-inch viewable screen pairs the WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel with local dimming, wide color support and Audio by Bang & Olufsen. This model brings together a large picture, high refresh rate and built-in streaming for films, live sport and games in one display.
Picture quality and viewing angle
The screen has a 3840 x 2160 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. TCL's Deep Color System combines quantum dots, a color filter and color processing, while the Halo Control System manages the Mini LED backlight. Local dimming adjusts light in separate parts of the screen so bright and dark areas can appear within the same scene. The TSR AI Processor adjusts picture settings to suit the incoming video.
TCL specifies a 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle for the 98X11L. Its WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel is designed to retain color across a wider seating area, with an anti-reflective surface that helps manage room light. This does not mean every seat or light source produces an identical image. The screen's large size makes seating position and nearby windows worth considering when planning its place in the room.
HDR and film settings
Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG are supported. These formats let the TV use the brightness and color information carried by compatible HDR content. Dolby Vision IQ can account for room lighting with the built-in light sensor. Film fans can select Filmmaker Mode, while separate Movie, Sports, Game and PC modes provide ways to suit different sources. A film must be supplied in a supported format to use that format's features.
Motion and gaming
The native panel refresh rate is 144Hz. Motion Rate 480 is TCL's motion-processing designation, not a 480Hz native panel specification. Variable refresh rate, Auto Low Latency Mode and FreeSync Premium Pro are included for supported game sources. Game Bar puts game-related controls together. The separate Game Accelerator 288 mode should not be read as a promise of native 4K at 288Hz; resolution and refresh options depend on the source and selected mode.
Streaming and smart control
Google TV provides access to streaming apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+, subject to app and regional availability. Internet access and any required service subscriptions are separate requirements. The TV also supports Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2 for compatible casting and screen sharing. A backlit voice remote and hands-free voice control give two ways to search or navigate. Google account and service setup may be required for connected features.
Ports and wireless connections
All four HDMI 2.1 inputs support up to 4K at 144Hz with a compatible source and cable. HDMI 1 also supports eARC for audio return. The TV includes one Ethernet port, one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports and optical digital audio output. Wireless connections include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4. An RF input and ATSC tuner support broadcast reception. There is no analog headphone output or composite AV input listed for this model.
Sound and daily use
Audio by Bang & Olufsen is built in, with Dolby Atmos processing and Dolby Atmos FlexConnect capability. Movie, Music, Speech, Game, Night and Sport sound presets offer different listening settings. Actual surround effects depend on the audio source and setup. Closed captions, a sleep timer, parental controls and an accessible menu system support everyday use. The backlit remote helps identify controls when the room lights are dimmed for a film. USB playback supports JPEG, PNG and BMP photos, plus AAC, MP3 and FLAC audio files.
Dimensions, finish and installation
With its stand, the 98X11L measures 85.3 x 51.7 x 16.5 inches, in width, height and depth. Without the stand it measures 85.3 x 49.8 x 0.8 inches. Weight is 148.81 lb with the stand and 145.5 lb without it; these are TV weights, not shipping weights. The stand separation is 78.9 inches. The front has a Mocha Metal finish, with a black rear and Mocha Metal and black stand. A 600 x 400 mm VESA pattern supports a suitably rated mount. Check both the TV's weight and mounting pattern when planning wall installation.
